Featured on the program is Mozart’s most beloved violin sonata,Turina’s dramatic musical storytelling with Spanish flair and Schumann’s most gorgeous, heart-wrenching cello solos.
Menahem Pressler talks about what’s important in music.
Pink Martini is just the right mix. Pour in a variety of genres, shake well and serve. Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras all over the world. This 12-piece band has a wildly diverse program that can swing within minutes from a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, to a 1930s French music hall, to a palazzo in Naples.
Thomas Lauderdale was working in Portland politics in 1994, thinking one day he might run for mayor. Fortunately, the pianist found the music at your average political fundraiser underwhelming. So he founded a “little orchestra” called Pink Martini in order to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers and progressive causes. In the process, he drew inspiration from music from all over the world with hopes of appealing to conservatives and liberals alike. “If the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully we’d be that band,” he says.
“All of us in Pink Martini have studied different languages as well as different styles of music from different parts of the world,” says Lauderdale. “So inevitably, our repertoire is wildly diverse. At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you’re in a French music hall of the 1930s or a palazzo in Napoli. It’s a bit like an urban musical travelogue.”

Old Town Pickers Come hear foot-stomping Bluegrass music we all love so much. Just as the personnel that make up the band come from various places and backgrounds, so does the inspiration for the music. Genres that are easily identifiable while giving these boys a listen are Delta blues, Appalachian roots, Texas country, jam and, of course, good old traditional bluegrass. With stand-out originals — which can be sad, humorous and often both — along with playful covers of songs spanning decades and genres, an Old Town Pickers show is exactly how they would describe it: “Fun!”
Solas is the quintessential Irish-American band, blending folk and country melodies, blues, jazz and world beat into stylized Celtic music. They intersperse the Irish genre with contemporary compositions and seasoned musicianship, showcasing everything from fiddles, flutes and accordions to a concertina and a bodhran.
The evening features a lineup of greatest hits, as well as the standalone act, Shamrock City, a multimedia show with remarkable photos and stories from the turn-of-the-century copper boomtown, Butte, Montana.
“For instrumental firepower and creative heft, there’s no beating Solas.” ~ San Francisco Chronicle
